Abstract Title:Sirenomelia: A Case Report

Biography: Dana Diane Villanueva is a graduate of Public Health at University of the Philippines-Visayas and completed Doctor of Medicine at Central Philippine University. She is currently a Pediatric Resident at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Inc.

Research Interest: Sirenomelia, also known as mermaid syndrome, is a rare multisystem congenital syndrome. Gestational diabetes mellitus and genetic susceptibility are associated risk factors. The exact pathogenesis is unknown, but there are different hypothesis such as vascular steal hypothesis and defective blastogenesis hypothesis. This case is a Filipino preterm neonate born to a fifth-degree consanguineous marriage who presented with fusion of lower limbs, renal agenesis, no anal and urethral opening, and single umbilical artery. Mother had gestational diabetes mellitus. Diagnostics were done wherein babygram revealed fusion of lower extremities with an absent left fibula, abdominal ultrasound revealed bilaterally absent kidneys and 2d echocardiography revealed severe pulmonary hypertension with patent ductus arteriosus still present. Respiratory distress noted on the third hour of life and was provided supportive management and eventually expired on the 28th hour of life. Prognosis of sirenomelia is poor due to its associated congenital anomalies. Termination of pregnancy is recommended if diagnosed antenatally.
